No More Barbie Toes: Top Barefoot Picks

Can I just say that I’m not a “foot person?” Ask anyone, feet have always weirded me out. But as much as I’ve wanted to avoid thinking about them, the truth is that our feet are the foundation of everything we do. From balance and movement to overall wellness, healthy feet are vital to how we function every single day. And let's be real—modern shoes aren’t doing us any favors.

Take a look at the shoes most people wear today. They’re narrow, pointed at the toe, and force all five toes into a cramped space. Over time, this unnatural position can lead to foot deformities like bunions, poor balance, and even joint issues higher up the body. Sure, modern shoes look great, but they’re a recipe for discomfort and long-term problems.

I discovered barefoot shoes about eight years ago, and they’ve completely changed how I view foot health. Unlike traditional footwear, barefoot shoes are designed to let your toes splay naturally, improving balance, athletic performance, and foot flexibility. They allow your feet to function as they’re meant to—strong, mobile, and supportive. Think about how a baby’s foot looks: wide, flat, and unrestricted. Barefoot shoes help bring our feet closer to their natural shape and function.

My Top Picks for Barefoot Kicks

See what I did there? I’ve tested a lot of barefoot shoe brands—seriously, I've probably dropped thousands at this point—and here are my tried-and-true favorites, plus some honest pros and cons. I'm not sponsored, these are my honest thoughts, and I'll continually update this post should I try or discover any new brands that make the list.

Such a simple concept, but so amazing. Pedestal makes socks with grippy rubber soles so you can feel everything while you train. They’re antimicrobial, affordable ($39.99 for one, or $97 for a pack of 3), and easy to care for—just let them air-dry them after washing. If you love lifting or working out barefoot, these are a must-try. One tip: Be careful running on the treadmill for long periods of time—I've found that the rubber part heats up quite a bit, which isn't all too pleasant. ;)

These are less obvious barefoot shoes and, unexpectedly, probably one of the most comfortable pairs I own. I'll admit they photograph well online, and in person didn't look as aesthetic as I was hoping. But they're truly grown on me, and now that I’ve walked miles in them, they feel like an absolute dream. The only downside? The Stimulus V1s have a slight pinch near the top of the foot at times, something I'm more than willing to look past as the pros well outweigh the cons. You can still snag a pair for $85, or give the V2's a shot. Highly recommend for all-day wear.

Literally the BEST barefoot sandal you’ll ever encounter. The strap system is perfect, they’re incredibly comfortable, and you can hike, run, or walk to your heart’s content in them. These were my go-to shoe when I traveled through El Salvador—they battled all types of terrain, heat, humidity, rain, and still look amazing. They've got a few different options depending on how thick you like your sole (I'm a big fan of the Chronos, but you do you). Like any well-worn shoe, they can get a little, well, you know... but they sell a fantastic wash to keep them funk-free. Bonus points for them being incredibly quick-drying!

My classics, my loves. Can you sponsor me already? I’ve owned 7 pairs (and counting)—including the Motus Strength, Primus Lite, Gobi, Tracker, Primus Trail—and they’ll always be my first recommendation for anyone seeking aesthetic barefoot shoes. They’re stylish, functional, and versatile. The downside? They’re pricey, and while I love their commitment to sustainability with material sourcing, repair and resole services, those services are just as expensive as the shoes themselves. Fingers crossed they expand their repair options to make them more affordable. Still, chef’s kiss—these are iconic.

These are a new find for me, but I’m obsessed. I call them my “barefoot Birks,” and they’ve quickly become a favorite. They’re more for fashion than functionality (though they have a wide toebox and zero drop), so they’re perfect for casual wear. They’re not made for walking miles, but they’ll make any outfit look cute.

Why Your Feet Deserve Barefoot Shoes

Still not convinced? Well, our feet might not be the most glamorous part of our body, but they’re essential to our health and movement. Supporting them with barefoot shoes can improve balance, mobility, and overall comfort—plus, they help your feet look and feel the way they’re naturally meant to. Whether you’re an athlete, a nature lover, or just someone who wants to take better care of your body, barefoot shoes are an incredible tool for building stronger, healthier feet.
